Algernon is an anteater, but he is a very ingenious one...He not only loves ants but especially chocolate covered ones. So, to find a supply of his new favorite food, he not only learns to read and to stand up tall, and to consequently join the circus!
This children's book is delightful, with a refreshing commentary describing Algernon's thoughts and his precocious stream-of-consciousness asides...
Meet Algernon the Anteater...you'll love him!
Algernon
ambled slowly across his acreage looking for ants. Ants were his passion. Ants
were his thing. Ants were his ambition, you might say. ANTS: Plain and simple,
fancy or spicy, it made little difference to Algernon.
White ants,
red ants, or black ants, it made no never mind to him. An ant was an ant was an
ant!
That was the
situation at exactly twelve and one-half minutes past ten o’clock on the
morning of June 26, 1981.
But! At
exactly thirteen and one-half minutes past ten o’clock on that same morning,
the entire situation changed!
Because,
that was the exact minute, the precise time, the historic moment when Algernon discovered
Chocolate-Covered-Ants!
Someone, I
don’t know who had left a full jar of chocolate covered ants in Algernon’s
backyard. Someone – it could have been anyone – left that jar with a partially
opened lid, just waiting to be pried off by a long, sticky, anteater tongue.
Whoever that
someone was, they were most careless, and that someone will go down in anteater
history as either the most blessed or most cursed, depending on the point of
view.
You see, it
all depends on the way one looks at the situation because finding that jar of
chocolate covered ants changed Algernon’s life completely forevermore.
“Algernon is an entertaining read that
shows the importance of being happy with who you are and realizing that every
decision leads to some action, good or bad.” ~ Cyrus Webb, media
