THE NURSE MARE’S TALE Is the story of Dinky’s mother Sadie, to her friends. During the time before his birth, she recalls the loss of her first baby taken from her by vicious wolves. At the barn, humans refer to her as Ghost for she is all white and very quiet. After Sadie gives birth to Dinky, she must endure another loss, when he is ripped away from her, so she can nurse a more prominent foal destined for greatness. After enduring years of breeding and loss, the older nurse mares must face the auction with the promise of being slaughtered, as they have become too old for breeding and nursing.
Do they accept their fate, or will there be another ending for the nurse mares that have given everything, and received little in return? The ending may surprise you. It is a poignant story that will make you cry and rejoice. 
The Nurse Mare's Tale is the story of Dinky's mom, known as Sadie to her friends, and Ghost to the humans at the barn. It is a poignant story of love, loss, heartache, and friendship that will rip your heart apart and stitch it back up.
Unlike Dinky: The Nurse Mare's Foal, it is not based on actual events. It is fiction but based upon research on the lives of the nurse mare. Much focus of late has been on the foals and fillies who are wrenched from their mother sometimes within a day, sometimes a few hours, but nothing much is written about the plight of the nurse mare, whose life is one of breeding and feeding. Unlike puppy mills, the nurse mare does not get to feed her own baby but is rented out to feed the foal or filly of the high-dollar mare. |
