It is fiction but based upon research on the lives of the nurse mare. Much focus of late has been on the foals and fillies who are wrenched from their mother sometimes within a day, sometimes a few hours, but nothing much is written about the plight of the nurse mare, whose life is one of breeding and feeding. Unlike puppy mills, the nurse mare does not get to feed her own baby but is rented out to feed the foal or filly of the high-dollar mare.
